Customer Reviews: 2 Average Customer Rating: Feb 27, 2008 Earl Shaffer - OracleMan Consulting from USA Good book that summarizes 11g new features I was looking for an overview of new features, from the point of view of someone who has used the DB release. I was not looking for syntax and all possible options for each new SQL command. I think the book satisfies that requirement.
The book has typos and another reviewer pointed out some errors. But anyone reading books published this close to the actual release of a new Oracle release knows that there will be minor problems with the book. Late into the release of 11gR1 other books will come out, maybe they will have fewer errors. But I wanted the info now. That is what I got in this book.
So I gave it 4 stars and I am happy I bought it.
Jan 10, 2008 LoveOracleBooks It's ok, just ok. This book is OK, but it contains a number of errors. Pages with obvious SQL example errors include 146, 165, and 166. There are quite a few others.
This book was also clearly written using the beta for 11g, and the authors missed several things that changed when production came out. For example the book says you can use hints to have your SQL use invisible indexes. You can not. I found out this was true in the 11g beta but not production.
Also the author says that you can set result_cache_mode to AUTO on page 176, but you can not. I suspect this was a beta left over too.
On page 162 the example of the use of lightweight jobs is incomplete as I had to go figure out how to create a program before I could create the lightweight job. This is not documented in the example thus you end up lost unless you know how to use the scheduler.
Another problem occurs on page 329. The author claims that a new feature (ignore constraint errors) is available and implies this feature is associated with external tables. This feature is, in fact, associated with expdp/impdp when Those utilities use external tables.
So, this book gets 3 stars... I struggled with 2 or 3, so I gave it 3.
