Many SQL Server-based applications perform far below expectation—costing money and time. And until now, there has been very little practical information available that explains how to identify and cure performance problems in SQL Server. But this book offers essential content to fill in the gap.

SQL Server Query Performance Tuning Distilled, Second Edition includes updated material plus one new chapter, and explains how to design and tune SQL Server applications to cope with ever-increasing workloads. With proven strategy, this book teaches you how to use SQL Server tools to identify a performance bottleneck, isolate the root cause, apply possible resolutions, and then quantify performance improvements. Also covered are crucial issues like index analysis and tuning, preventing deadlocks, optimizing workload, and minimizing costs.

Extremely useful - a must have for all SQL Developers and DBAs
The author has written an exceptionally helpful book. The book is organized into major categories and are presented with extenstive examples. After reading this book, I was able to rewrite an existing query and improve it dramatically. Between the index optimization and the join sequences, this proved to be an invaluable tool. I have switched from buying books from Wrox to Apress.

Comprehensive, detailed and clearly written.
A thorough, clear and detailed explanation of database optimization organized by each component of the process. This is the most complete of the 3 books I've read on the subject. The sample queries are concise and explained in detail.

The author conveys a treasure trove of practical information without getting lost in the details of SQL Server internals.
