As Web sites and intranets become larger and more complex, static HTML files hit their limits. They are hard to maintain and cannot be used for advanced Web-based applications like e-commerce systems or XML data processing. PHP is the right tool for anyone wanting to create highly sophisticated Web applications. This server-side scripting language is fast, free, and easy to use for novice users and powerful Web developers. This book teaches professionals the advanced aspects of Web applications. They will learn how to write applications that provide real value to their customers, how to connect databases to the Web, use XML to layout data and make large Web sites easier to maintain. It provides information that is sorely needed by the Open Source development community. In the first part ofWeb Application Development with PHP
the authors explain PHP's advanced syntax like classes, recursive functions and variable variables. They present software development methodologies and coding conventions which are a must-know for industry quality products as well as to help making development faster and more productive. This part covers also many standard algorithms for tree-structures, string sorting and searching. Part two focuses on the concept of Web applications (as opposed to single scripts) and gives insight into user and session management, e-commerce systems, XML applications and WDDX. The third part of the book is for developers who need to take PHP to the limit: it covers extending PHP with C functions, shows PHP4's great new features and tools, such as the debugger and optimizing compiler. If you’re developing Web applications with PHP, this book provides you with: - Explanations of PHP concepts and advanced syntax
- Coverage of software design, teamwork, security, and usability
- Information on many standard algorithms for tree structures, string sorting, and searching
- Insights into user and session management, e-commerce systems,
- XML applications, WDDX, and knowledge repositories

Customer Reviews: 5 Average Customer Rating: Nov 3, 2004 Eduardas Tamoshauskas from Klaipeda, Lithuania Context might have shifted, since written This book can look uneven in todays context, so buyer should take care to know what to expect. This one is more abstract and, also, to meet PHP4. However, there certainly was time, I was happy when got this book, and read it eagerly, with something still left to grow to. Also there were purer references of much less use in PHP part of my library. It still can make great reading, I believe, just make sure this is right for you. There is broader view on PHP as tool for application construction (as of year 2000). And for reference - nothing matches online PHP docs.
Jan 14, 2003 A review from Mexico PHP confused I really did not find this book useful at all, it gave only the tips to good programing, but I was searching for something more oriented to code and ways of actually develop web applications.
Jan 24, 2001 Ruckh from Arizona PHP - Not Really From a 'TEXT' only point of view I am still trying to figure out why people gave this book so many stars. If you have ever taken a design course or have had any software development experience, then you have already gained the knowledge you will gain from this book. This book, in my opinion, is not really geared at PHP at all. This book is more a fundamentals book on good programming practices. This book takes you through the entire software development cycle and has some very good tips (If that is what you are looking for. Session management being the most interesting topic). Unfortunately I thought I was buying a book that would help me learn PHP. If you are looking for a good PHP reference, I would not recommend this book.
Dec 18, 2000 A review from California Great For the Well-Founded PHP Programmer If you've gotten a good intro to PHP (I recommend PHP Essentials by Julie Meloni), then you should read this book. It's great, and it gets into the computer science-ish stuff of PHP, as well as a lot of practical stuff; about a 50/50 mix. Definitely worth your time.
Dec 1, 2000 info@dshield.org from MA/USA Very readable introduction to PHP and Web Applications. First, I was surprised to see the little box it arrived in. I expected another phone book style printout of online documentation. This book is something you can actually read in bed! It does not overlap with the online info at php.net at all. It explains the different challenges of web based applications and how they can be solved using php. A lot of little case studies and only the necessary code printouts.
Great book if you have already written a few php pages and are now ready for your first real project.
