Customer Reviews: 2 Average Customer Rating: Aug 30, 2006 Ron Jennings (ronj@chasersecurity.com) from Fresno Ca, I agree with the first review. This is a must have book if you want to learn Windows Security. You will not find a better book on the subject.
Jul 16, 2005 Steven L Umbach from Chicago area Great info on securing your Windows network! Will help anyone from administrators to power users who want to learn how to secure their computer/network. The first two chapters are non Microsoft - Key Principles of Security and Understanding Your Enemy as there is much more than technology to secure a network and manage risk. It has complete lists and explanations of security options, user rights, services, groups, and sids. Goes into detail on authentication [including how kerberos works] and password policy. Shows how to use Group Policy, security templates, EFS, domain/forest design, differences in L2TP and PPTP, using security assesment tools, and automate patch management. Exposes you to all features of Windows 2000/2003/XP Pro used to secure your network. End of chapter has best practices and links to KB articles and pertinent white papers of topics discussed. Excellent chapter on auditing with lists of Event ID's. Full chapter on securing laptops, IE security settings, and another for 802.1X. Text is well written and does not contain fluff but is to the point. For instance there is a great chapter on securing tcp/ip. It starts with a brief three page intro for tcp/ip for the benefit of those that have little knowledge of it - not a full chapter tutorial. It is the same for Group Policy, etc. Every system admin, network owner, and MCSE student should own this book.
