Getting up to speed with Visual Basic .NET might seem challenging to programmers
who already work in Visual Basic 6.0. This handy book is stuffed full of standalone,
working code samples that show these programmers exactly how to perform important
tasks with Visual Basic .NET. Each practical code sample covers a single essential
development concept-DataGrid sorting and filtering, for example-plus related features
to help programmers get up to speed quickly with Visual Basic .NET. The samples
are all written to exacting standards based on best coding practices, and each
is accompanied by helpful instructions, expert commentary, and pointers to other
books and resources. No other book offers so many complete, standalone code samples
and explanations-resulting in a useful coding reference aimed at every level of
expertise.

Target Audience:
Visual Basic 6 and Visual Basic .NET developers
About the Technology:
Microsoft Visual Basic has the largest user-base of any development language,
currently estimated at 3.5 million professional programmers worldwide, and that
base is continuing to grow. While Visual Basic used to be considered a hobbyist's
language, it has quickly gained the respect of serious developers and is now
widely used in corporate and commercial environments. Visual Basic .NET has
amazing new features such as powerful object-oriented capabilities, inheritance
and multithreading, which will further push Visual Basic as a premier, enterprise-level
development tool and draw more and more people to the language. Also, due to
the complex changes to Visual Basic in Visual Basic .NET, current Visual Basic
programmers must rethink their programming strategies and methodologies and,
essentially, learn a new language.
About the Author(s):
Sean Campbell, Scott Swigart, Bob Carver, Patrick Barnes, Jim Pragit, Oz Rugless,
Kris Horrocks is a team of authors from 3 Leaf Solutions, which is a company
that provides training, consulting and other services to early adopters of Microsoft
technology. 3 Leaf Solutions does a significant number of external and internal
projects directly for Microsoft. These projects allow 3 Leaf Solutions to gain
a deep understanding of new Microsoft products and technologies before they
appear publicly. Once products are released publicly 3 Leaf Solutions then takes
the knowledge they have gained and enables early adopters to build solutions
that build upon newly released products via consulting, mentoring, training
or other services. These experiences with Microsoft and early adopters have
led 3 Leaf Solutions to a deep understanding of the core questions and concerns
of VB.NET developers. The 100 sample applications detailed in this book are
derived from the experiences of 3 Leaf consultants and their exposure to real
world adopters of VB.NET. These applications leverage the years of experience
3 Leaf already has in designing VB.NET applications to show developers "in
code" how to develop VB.NET Windows Forms and Web Form applications.
Customer Reviews
Customer Reviews: 2 Average Customer Rating: Aug 20, 2003 Excellent I found this book to be a great resource of real world code and applications that I can quickly learn from.
Aug 13, 2003 Everything you need to know This book is very in-depth on the topics that you actually use when building real applications. It spends a lot of time on user interface and data access (the core of the applications that I build), but covers many other .NET topics as well (sending mail, interacting with the OS, a good tour of the stuff you need from the base class library, etc.)
The other thing I like about this book is there's just no fluff. It's just really solid information from start to finish.
