The secret language of 0s and 1s revealed!
What do flashlights, the British invasion, black cats, and seesaws have to
do with computers? In CODE, they show us the ingenious ways we manipulate language
and invent new means of communicating with each other. And through CODE, we
see how this ingenuity and our very human compulsion to communicate have driven
the technological innovations of the past two centuries.
Using everyday objects and familiar language systems such as Braille and Morse
code, author Charles Petzold weaves an illuminating narrative for anyone who’s
ever wondered about the secret inner life of computers and other smart machines.
It’s a cleverly illustrated and eminently comprehensible story—and along the
way, you’ll discover you’ve gained a real context for understanding today’s
world of PCs, digital media, and the Internet. No matter what your level of
technical savvy, CODE will charm you—and perhaps even awaken the technophile
within.

Customer Reviews: 3 Average Customer Rating: Apr 10, 2003 Amazing from the beginning to the end I loved this book. I never took an EE class and always wanted to, this book really satisfies that craving for knowledge in this area. I can't believe the price, what a great amount of information in this really well written book.
It's like listening to a one on one talk from someone you know. Great diagrams.
Sep 4, 2001 A review from Cleveland, Ohio USA Very good book Explains a lot. A five star book. Get it. However, some areas could use a quick explanation of things are done on modern chips/processors.
Apr 20, 2001 From bits to GUIs Well organized and written book explains the basics of bits better than any book I've read. It's definitely a "So that's how that works..." type of book. Book blurb claims it's comprehensible for non-techies but I'm not so sure about that.
