Customer Reviews: 5 Average Customer Rating: Apr 12, 2008 Late to the Party Best of the Best!!! This is one execeptional book by any standard. So why write a review for a SQL Server 2000 book when the 2005 version is about to be replaced by SQL Server 2008? Simple. If you're new to SQL Server and/or T-SQL and want a solid grounding, this is THE book for you. It's highly readable, contains solid information on the server's features and will teach you T-SQL very quickly. You'll be amazed at how much you'll learn without once suffering the pains of feeling like you're wading through a manual. Moreover, the content is applicable to at least 95% of SQL Server 2005. If you want indepth theory this isn't your book but if you're more interested in gaining practical knowledge of SQL Server and how to get something done then this is your "go to" book!
Oct 19, 2001 Eric Polson from Forest Grove OR Excelent Resource This was an excelent book for insights into SQL Server. All the examples are well thought out and, best of all, they all work flawlesly, not like some reference books.
Jul 20, 2001 Charlie Larzalere from Seattle, WA Rocket Science for Rocket Scientists Kalen's experience with SQL Server goes way back to its origins with Sybase. Her in depth knowledge is relied upon by many in Redmond (she teaches classes to Microsoft). This is one book that is definitely not for the newbie wanting to learn SQL Server, there are plenty of other books out there for that. This one is for experienced DBAs who already possess knowledge with the product. If you want to learn how to administer or code for SQL Server, start somewhere else! Want to get your MCDBA? Don't look here, this book goes WAY beyond what Microsoft expects you to know for the tests.
With those caveats in place, there's no better reference on the internals of SQL Server than this book. Index tuning, memory management, buffer optimization are all covered.
Kalen's articles also appear monthly in SQL Server magazine.
May 27, 2001 Steven M. Boegeman (boegeman@home.com) from Mission Viejo, CA All the details behind SQL Server 2000! Outstanding! This book was written for the intermediate or advanced SQL Server 2000 user. If you want to know the true nuts and bolts of SQL Server 2000, this is the book for you! The history of SQL Server is most interesting. Query processing was most helpful.
May 21, 2001 An Oracle DBA learning SQL Server from Philadelphia, PA Not for the faint of heart - more a reference than a tutorial First, I was new to SQL Server 2000 and looking for hard info, but a bit of a tutorial too.
It is a great book full of a lot of detail. But it does not flow perfectly. It is a bit dry. A bit too much text and too few diagrams. The author is quite up on all the important topics - obviously an expert. But I was hoping for an easier read and a bit more flow.
If you are already a SQL Server DBA, especially one very familiar with 6.5 or 7, this is probably a great resource for you. If you are new to all of this, you may want to get a good deal of hands-on before you get this - but you should get this.
