Okay intro - but a long way from a complete guide
This book is a fair introduction to SuSE (and Linux in general), but it is quite deficient in the matter of preparing you for the CLP exam. It tries to cover in 500 pages what the actual Novell course covers in probably 3 times that space, and probably only does an adequate job on the first half of the offical course. A great example of wasted space in this book is the use of 12 full pages to display the entire contents /etc/printcap and /etc/services, which is something easily left for user to display on a working SuSE system. Yet there isn't even a full page of coverage on each of the many of the vital infrastructure services that are likely topics on the exam.

That said, I found the script programming material decent, particularly for those that don't have scripting background. In addition, core Linux topics like permissions, fundamental command line tools, and GUI features are covered well.

The bottom line is that one could use this book as described as a "guide", but when it comes to all the infrastructure tools that are listed in the CLP objectives, you will need to get additional material out there and work with the services to prepare. Fortuanately, since Linux infrastructure is open source, the material is out there.
