SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services streamlines the process of extricating meaningful
reports from SQL Server, but comes with its own challenges and pitfalls. Hitchhiker's
Guide to SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services picks up where the Microsoft documentation
leaves off. It provides database administrators, application developers, and their
managers with invaluable behind-the-scenes information on the workings of Reporting
Services.
Written on the final product release and with the direct involvement of the
Microsoft development team, this book offers an authoritative but independent
look at the technology. The authors--both Microsoft MVPs who've worked with
the technology since the beginning--reveal hidden problems and workarounds as
they steer you through each step in report installation, management, security,
creation, and programming. You can start setting up simple single-server installations
or Web farms right away while gaining an in-depth understanding of every Reporting
Services feature.
The special companion DVD includes narrated video demonstrations that show
you how to safely navigate the trickier parts of this technology. The DVD also
includes the Service Pack, Books onLine refresh kit, Reporting Services evaluation
version, code samples, and much more. A reader-only Web site provides book and
technology updates, new templates and add-ins, plus access to newsgroups, discussion
groups, and other support.
Key topic coverage includes:
- Reporting Services basics
- The Report Designer
- The Report Manager
- Security
- The Visual Studio .NET 2003 add-in for creating and deploying reports
- Solving installation, design, configuration, security, and subscription
problems

Customer Reviews: 2 Average Customer Rating: Dec 29, 2005 Scott Whigham from Dallas, TX, USA Very solid I bought this earlier this year and just expected a nice overview on Reporting Services. I think that it goes well beyond - admin, rdl, and much more. I haven't seen a better book on SQL Server Reporting Services but, after reading this one, I didn't feel the need to look for another lol Scott Whigham - Content Manager for LearnItFirst.com
Apr 27, 2005 Stephen Szyszkiewicz from Delran, NJ Excellent Resource This book/cd/ and access to an optional website combine to create an excellent resource that anyone dealing with Reporting Services needs to read. The book is not a rehash of the documentation provided by Microsoft. It is a terrific top to bottom explanation of: - how to install Reporting Services - how to manage Reporting Services - How to develop for reporting Services - How to get Reporting Services to do things it doesnt do out of the box. The attendant CD gives instructions, and a live demo, on how to setup and use SSL on your development web servers. In fact the CD has loads of walkthroughs, some with voice, that provide all kinds of information you need to know to properly configure SQL Reporting Services. When SQL 2005 comes out I will buy the book these two write.
