This is a very different book on the C language! In an easy,
conversational style Expert C Programming explains the difficult
areas of ANSI C that other books gloss over, like why C declarations are
so complicated and how to code arrays that can grow and shrink in size.
The author, Peter van der Linden, has worked for Sun's compiler and OS
kernel group for the past seven years. He presents dozens of astonishing
examples drawn from practical experience, including:
- Software that blew up the space probe to Venus
- The C bug that shut down the entire AT&T phone system
- How hardware quirks affect C software
- C programmer job interview secrets
- Why programmers can't tell Halloween from Christmas day
- The C code for a complete BASIC interpreter
Expert C Programming reveals the coding techniques used by the best C
programmers. It relates C to other languages, and includes the first
introduction to C++ that can actually be understood by programmers
without weeks of mind-bending study.
This colorful book covers both the IBM PC and UNIX systems. It is an
entertaining and educational romp through C showing how it is really
used by the experts. Expert C Programming is a MUST READ for everyone
who has ever used the C programming language, or who wants to learn
more about the implementation, practical use, and folklore of C.
This is the only book on the market that decodes key sections of the
ANSI C standard into English, and explains how compiler writers and
programmers cope with the whole thing. Its down-to-earth approach is
packed full of practical help.
Don't expect Expert C Programming to describe what i = j; means, but
instead it's a grab-bag of all the quirks and oddities of the C lan-
guage that you won't find written down anywhere else!
This should be every programmer's second book on C.

Customer Reviews: 6 Average Customer Rating: Jul 27, 2002 dmp (dmp@iwright.com) from United States one of the best programming books ever This isn't a book for beginners, but if you really want to *KNOW* C this is the book. Van Der Linder may have written the crappy "Just Java" book, but don't judge him by that one. This is a classic. Don't program C without it...
Mar 13, 2002 Kurt Christensen The best programming book ever written, period. Although I probably won't need to use C ever again, I must say that this is my favorite technical book of all time. I've never read another book that crams as much advanced content into so few pages, and in a manner that actually makes the book fun to read. Expert C Programming should be required reading for all aspiring technical writers. Kudos to Mr. van der Linden.
Aug 4, 2000 Tollef Slaathaug from Norway Best C book ever! There should be more books like this. It's very funny and reveals things not explained in other books. It's technical, detailed and takes your understanding to a higher level. It would be great if there was a book like this about C++.
Mar 23, 2000 Best Book on Advanced C Excellent book on C , a pleasure to read. A must read for all C learners.
Sep 27, 1999 A review from Silicon Valley, CA Great book! 1. Highly technical 2. To the point 3. Precise to the topic 4. Entertaining to read 5. Practical examples and real life solutions 6. Authors experience @ Sun Microsystems
Not for beginers! Excellent tips and tricks, quirks of the language. Use programming challange to test your knowledge of C and things like are bit patterns for 1 and 1.0 equal?
May 3, 1999 The best computer book of all time Often it's difficult to read a book with so much in-depth technical knowledge, but Expert C Programming is so entertaining that you may actually find it hard to put down. Although many of us are turning towards Java, the information in this book is still relevant to anyone who strives to be a well-rounded programmer.
