THE SCJP book
As is the case with every work I've read from Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates, the book is exceptionally well done both technically and conversationally. Kudos to both authors!

Great book to go from 0 to 60 in java.
Hello; I held a bi-weekly developer study group for the SCJP. Students ranged from fresh college grad with little java experience to Sr Java developer. To my knowledge all 15 developers passed thier first time. Ok the Junior guys reqired more hand holding and explantions than the senior guys. But it did help us practice our "simplifying technical jarogon" skills.

The one thing that I did not like about it was that I could not figure out how break the practice exam up into short 10-20 mini-quizes instead of sitting for upto 2 hours.
