Customer Reviews: 4 Average Customer Rating: Aug 5, 2005 R. M. Menon from CA, USA A must-buy! Tom kyte is the foremost authority on Oracle and his books in general are more than your money's worth. This is another one of his gems. I loved all the chapters (Esp. the chapters 5 through 9.) His writing style is clear and his examples are thorough. The best part are his proof points which showcase the power of simple experiments that eventually the reader can carry out herself. His web site http://asktom.oracle.com is also very highly recommended. Buy this book and you won't regret it.
Jan 15, 2004 Cary Millsap from Dallas, Texas One of the FIRST BOOKS an Oracle DBA or developer needs Taking advice from Oracle "experts" has always been risky. Most "expert advice" about Oracle performance in books today is blatantly wrong. Even advice that is correct today is at risk of becoming wrong with your next Oracle patch.
Tom Kyte's contribution to the professional community is completely different and eminently more valuable. "Effective Oracle by Design" teaches you to TEST instead of perpetuating your reliance upon unsubstantiated tips and techniques. This book is practical because it TEACHES you, by EXAMPLE, HOW to TEST. For example, it illustrates the practical details of constructing a testing environment. It opens dozens of critical questions for which Oracle practitioners need answers. For each question, Tom shows you how to construct an elegant test case to reveal the truth about some behavior of an Oracle system.
With this book the attentive reader learns two skills that are absolutely mandatory for any Oracle architect, performance analyst, DBA, or developer. You learn how to find the truth. And you learn how to create compelling evidence that will convince others of that truth. With this book, you can learn how to inspire colleagues, managers, and vendors to improve your system the way you say to improve it. And with this book, you can learn how to make sure that when people DO follow your advice, you won't have embarrassed yourself.
Nov 22, 2003 Malcolm from Boston,Ma Effective Oracle by Design is a winner. Tom Kyte has managed to write a highly readable book that will prove invaluable to the data architect, developer, and DBA. I personally like detailed empirical examples. This book makes extensive use of emprical information by walking us through Oracle tuning scenarios, design enhancements, and coding tips. It truly bridges the chasm between the Oracle documentation and what I need as DBA to get a handle on my database. You would think that a book of this scope would lose effectiveness as a reference, but not so. I find myself referring to this book more than the web for some of the most arcane questions (setting 10053 events for example). I started my career working with DB2 in the early 80s and moved on to Oracle in 1992. Since then Ive been looking for an Oracle equivalent to IBM's excellent Redbooks -- books written by technologists that consolidate and present detailed technical information in a clear, and concise manner. This book is our Oracle equivalent.
Oct 4, 2003 Dave Slotnick from London U. K. Loosing its lustre Many love Tom Kyte for through Oracle examples, but the organisation of this book is wanting and the examples are long-winded and obtuse. I trust the author and do not need long-winded code example to prove a point. Content is good, but the same book could have been done with half the pages.
