We asked some of our (and your!) favorite authors to share with us their favorite 10 computer books from the past 10 years. Here's what we got back.

Harshad Oak SCJP and SCWCD, is the creator of the Java J2EE portal IndicThreads.com. As an accomplished book author, he wrote Oracle JDeveloper 10g: Empowering J2EE Development and Pro Jakarta Commons as well as coauthored Java 2 Enterprise Edition 1.4 Bible. He is also the founder of Rightrix Solutions, primarily involved in software development and content management services.

Additionally, Harshad is a Sun Certified Java Programmer and a Sun Certified Web Component Developer and has a master's degree in computer management from Symbiosis, India. And finally, he has written on Java and J2EE for CNET's Builder.com and served as guest lecturer from time to time at various institutions.

Harshad's favorite books:
Ivor Horton's Beginning Java 2 by Ivor Horton -- This book can help get your Java basics right.

A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification by Khalid A. Mughal and Rolf W. Rasmussen -- I like certification books as they tend to be more focused. I used this book (Bookpool note: an earlier version) when I appeared for my SCJP. It sure helped.

Extreme Programming Explained: Embrace Change by Kent Beck -- A thought-provoking book that explains the idea of extreme programming very well.

UML Distilled: A Brief Guide to the Standard Object Modeling Language, 3rd Edition by Martin Fowler -- A quick, no-nonsense guide to UML.

Mastering Enterprise JavaBeans by Ed Roman, et al -- To learn EJBs, I chose this book because a free pdf was available for download. EJB was a popular yet scary subject at that time and this book helped me start with EJBs.

Head First EJB: Passing the Sun Certified Business Component Developer Exam by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates -- This was the first Head First book I read and I enjoyed the fun approach to learning technology.

The Career Programmer: Guerilla Tactics for an Imperfect World by Christopher Duncan -- Good read about various issues encountered by software developers.
(The author's original choice was an older edition that is now out of print. This link is to the new edition now available)

Google Hacks by Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest -- I never knew that Google could do all this.
(The author's original choice was an older edition that is now out of print. This link is to the new edition now available)

Joel on Software by Joel Spolsky -- Good read about various topics encountered during software development.

SCWCD Exam Study Kit, 2nd Edition (310-081) by Hanumant Deshmukh, Jignesh Malavia -- The book that helped me pass my SCWCD. I still refer to it regularly while working with JSPs and Servlets.
