A very readable description of what makes up a complex software project, explaining why any software is more than the sum of its parts.
Art of Computer Programming Volumes 1-3 by Donald Knuth --
A true reference work.
Transaction Processing: Concepts and Techniques by Jim Gray and Andreas Reuter --
When I need to find out how and why the SQL Server designers did what they did, this is where I go. It's been around for a while, but there's still nothing to compare with it.
Advanced Transact-SQL for SQL Server 2000 by Itzik Ben-Gan and Thomas Moreau --
If you need to know how to perform tasks in the SQL language that you thought just weren't possible, check here before you give up.
Mastering Windows 2000 Server (Out Of Print) by Mark Minasi --
When I need to find out how to do something in Windows, Mark will tell me.
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Performance Tuning Technical Reference by Steve Adrien DeLuca, et al --
This book really explains the tools that monitor all the details of SQL Server running on Windows, including all the nitty-gritty details of Performance Monitor.
Cuckoo's Egg: tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage by Clifford Stoll --
Mainly I like this book because it's an example of how technology can be fascinating reading for almost anybody.
Happiness Is a Choice by Barry Neil Kaufman --
I don't just read tech books.
Inside Microsoft Windows 2000 (Out of Print) by David A. Solomon and Mark E. Russinovich --
This book explains the inner workings of Windows in the same way that I like to explain the inner workings of SQL Server, and it explains at the level I need to know.
