We asked some of our (and your!) favorite authors to share with us their favorite 10 computer books from the past 10 years. Here's what we got back.

Sean Convery, CCIE No. 4232, is a security architect in Cisco Systems' Security Technology Group, focusing on new security technologies. He has been with Cisco for six years and is best known as the principal architect of the original Cisco SAFE Security Blueprint, as well as author of several of its white papers. Sean recently published his first book, Network Security Architectures detailing secure network design methods.

During his time at Cisco, Sean has presented secure network design to thousands of Cisco customers around the world and has consulted with scores of customers on their security designs both large and small. Prior to his time at Cisco, Sean held various positions in both IT and security consulting during his 12 years in networking.

Sean's favorite books:

TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1: The Protocols by W. Richard Stevens -- My favorite book on TCP/IP. This one needs an update but is still quite excellent.

DNS and BIND, 5th Edition by Paul Albitz and Cricket Liu -- If you do anything with DNS, you need this book. I've been using this book since the 2nd edition. They are on a fourth edition now.
(The author's original choice was an older edition that is now out of print. This link is to the new edition now available)

Applied Cryptography: Protocols, Algorithms, and Source Code in C, 2nd Edition by Bruce Schneier -- For understanding the foundations of crypto, this book is excellent.

Routing TCP/IP, Volume 1 by Jeff Doyle -- Doyle's book is an excellent reference for TCP/IP routing.
(The author's original choice was an older edition that is now out of print. This link is to the new edition now available)

Unix in a Nutshell by Arnold Robbins -- This is the standard desktop reference to the UNIX operating system (not counting the man pages themselves).
(The author's original choice was an older edition that is now out of print. This link is to the new edition now available)

TCP/IP Network Administration by Craig Hunt -- If you use TCP/IP with UNIX, this book is another standard reference.

Essential System Administration by Aeleen Frisch -- The catch-all, UNIX system administration handbook.

Internet Routing Architectures, 2nd Edition by Sam Halabi and Danny McPherson -- For sysadmins dealing with BGP in any way, this is an essential reference.

by Ross Anderson -- Excellent reference on security concepts not limited strictly to computers.

Practical Unix & Internet Security by Simson Garfinkel, Gene Spafford and Alan Schwartz -- If you are involved with the security of a UNIX host, this book will be an excellent reference.
