Customer Reviews: 14 Average Customer Rating: Jun 4, 2002 Ahbaid Gaffoor from Guyana, South America & Dallas, TX Works for DBAs, Great for newcomers... I found this book good as a syllabus guide when studying for the exam. It teaches you the concepts of the database and it's architecture. The important part is, you must practice what you are learning. You cannot "study" oracle and get certified, you must understand it.
That said, I've been doing oracle administration for eight years. So it was easier for me than a novice DBA. However, I do recommend this book for anyone considering entering oracle database administration whether they plan on getting certified or not. Going through it from cover to cover gives a good foundation for future DBAs
P.S. Ignore the Chicago Guru comment.. sounds like he/she failed an exam. The key to passing these exams is to get on an Oracle database and practice, practice, practice! I have seen many people cram and study for these exams only to fail. Visit otn.oracle.com and get an account. From there you can download oracle's software and practice.
Mar 8, 2002 Aguo from US Not Perfect, but still a good book Jason's OCP Developer Book is much better than this OCP DBA one. The book is not perfect but covers most of OCP contents. It is enough for someone with average IQ to pass OCP exams.
Jan 23, 2002 Leon Lee from NYC Not Perfect, but ok This book is way from perfect. Many topics (10-25%) are missing in the books but presented in the exams. Many sections of the book are too wordy. Compared with other exam preparation books, this one is better presented and better organized than all the others. If I have to buy one book for exams and I have tight schedule for exams, this is probably it.
Nov 20, 2001 Oracle Guru from Chicago Passport to Failure in the Cert. Exam You might get about 50% of the answers in the Exam from this book. Unless you study other books such as Oracle 8i Exam Cram series or you have more knowledge on the subject than you think, you will fail. The best (and guaranteed) way to pass the tests would be to study the Exam crams books, download and read though the documentation from Oracle's website (otn.oracle.com) and get practice the "Self Test" from selftestsoftware.com. (Think about wasting over $100 on test fee and waiting another month to take the test again, if you fail).
Sep 3, 2001 irfani from Alexandria, VA My personal view. I found this book good for me. I had Oracle programming experience and I was able to learn most of DBA tasks just by reading and practicing at home.
Sep 2, 2001 Ashok Devarajan from Fiji Excellent The book is well authored and has the precise information to get certification. The topics and contents are well presented. I went through this book and got myself certified. I am an OCP now.
Jul 11, 2001 Rakesh from USA This book is sufficent to pass OCP test. Although the author has used long words to express the topic, but it's good.
May 29, 2001 Great for certification This book is great for passing the 5 certification exams. Though a fair portion of the information in this book, especially backup and recovery is incorrect, you will still easily get certified. Okay as a reference guide.
Apr 27, 2001 Preji Kuriakose My Jackpot.... When I came accross this book i felt like I won a lottery or a Jackpot..We are so lucky to have such organized-books concentrating on OCP...i passed my test due to my this real guide, nothing else...
I wish people may buy it first, else there will definately a regret in future,,..its my sincere advice to go for this book if you wanna be an OCP.....
best wishes..

Mar 30, 2001 JM from Oklahoma City You will fail the exam if you depend on this book! This author is very wordy. The information is sparse and not correct in many cases. Check out the four Sybex DBO and DBA books. They are much better. Those combined with the Self Test Software exams and practice with the databases using Oracle's Database CD Packs from the OracleStore will enable you to pass the tests with confidence. This book sucks! Don't waste your money.
Apr 23, 2001 Daryl from Dallas, TX Rushed to market and it shows I used this book to prepare for the first two exams (SQL and DBA), and it is adequate. On the downside, the prose is very dense (more diagrams would be helpful) and the topics aren't always complete. The unit for the networking exam is only on the CD in Acrobat (PDF) format, which is a downer. I guess they saved money by using your paper instead of theirs. (Or they sent it to the press before the text was done.) I don't know what books would be better, though, and I do like the end-of-chapter "bullet point" reviews.
Mar 12, 2001 Ashutosh Gaur from San Jose, CA Donate your money to some charity instead. This is one real lousy and highly priced book. Don't go for it if you cannot make out if what is printed is ACTUALLY right. If you've been a DBA for a couple of years, this book might help you become a good proof reader.
Mar 6, 2001 A review from Alexandria, VA Not a complete source for OCP I am OCP certified DBA. I used this book for SQL and Tuning exams. I found this book not very useful, and also some questions and answers in the book are not correct on tuning section. Be prepared to found topics on exam that are not mentioned in the book.
Feb 24, 2001 Asad Shaikh (shaikh74@yahoo.com) from Milwaukee, WI A good book for intermediate Oracle users. This is a good book for folks who have some knowledge about Oracle. This is not a book for beginners. It assumes that the reader knows about the subject. I found it very useful and I am happy that I bought this book.
